The Music Department at Lincoln Middle School enjoys a long-standing tradition of musical excellence. This level of excellence is maintained by individual and group accountability through rigorous academic study and effort. The Music Department offers a developmental curriculum that is organized into three levels (Introductory, Intermediate, Advanced). All students have the opportunity to participate in music courses by enrolling in the Introductory level classes. Placement in Intermediate and Advanced classes is determined by audition and assessment of student behavior.

Students enrolled in music classes will be expected to achieve:
- An understanding of the basic elements of music
- An ability to read, write, and interpret music
- An ability to sing or play independently and in groups
- The application of proper technique and listening skills
- An appreciation for the historical and expressive qualities of music
The required homework of all music students is routine practice at home. Signed practice records are collected weekly and comprise a significant portion of the overall grade. “A” level practice is equivalent to a minimum of:
30 minutes, 5 days a week for instrumental music and 15 minutes, 5 days a week for choral music
In addition to practice records, grades are determined by tests, homework, daily participation, and attendance at all rehearsals/performances. Detailed information regarding the specifics of each course is contained in the Music Student/Parent Handbook.
